This gear hauler features 22”tubes and can handle a heavy load. This boat will accommodate up to 4 thwarts and enable you take all the luxuries of home, including the kitchen sink.
The 156 incorporates the long continuous side panel with a curve on each end, similar to the Puma. While this size raft is most popular in the R series, it is also available in the diminishing tube “D” series.

R series
The popular ‘R’ Series rafts are the workhorses of the AIRE fleet. These boats are ideal for carrying people and cargo. ‘R’ stands for ‘round’, meaning a traditional round boat design. ‘R’ Series rafts have a broader beam, large tube diameters and long waterlines making them the most stable of all AIRE rafts.
The 156R is an all-purpose, expedition sized raft and the most popular of our bigger raft designs. It’s not too small for the Grand Canyon and not too large for the occasional paddle raft party trip down your favorite big river. It’s an especially popular outfitter raft because of its tried and true reputation.
- Large Tubes: With a 22″ tube diameter all the way around the boat, the 156R has classic raft handling with extra stability in big water.
- Long Waterline: We’ve designed the 156R to have a long waterline and it tracks like it. Point it in a direction, give it some gas and it will stay on course.
- Carrying Capacity: The 156R can handle a sizeable 3-bay frame, a pile of gear, and an extra passenger or two. The 156R is a comfortable, convenient raft for those who like to row from one big beach to the next.

D Series
The ‘D’ Series rafts evolved from the sporty design of the Puma and Super Puma. The ‘D’ refers to the diminishing tubes of the bow and stern of this model. The ‘D’ series design offers a maneuverable and responsive boat while being able to accommodate large loads.
Need a big raft for your crew, but don’t want to compromise agility for size? Maybe it’s time for an AIRE 156D … The 156D is a big, agile raft. It’s right at home with up to a 9 person paddle team, including the guide, or it can be outfitted with a frame for multi-day river trips. You don’t have buy a barge to get some extra room for your crew. Keep it lively with a 156D.
- Diminished Bow and Stern Tubes: 156D side tubes are 22” in diameter, giving you plenty of floatation. The bow and stern tube diameter diminishes down to 19″ which makes for an action-packed ride.
- Continuous Curve Design: The 156D incorporates continuous curve design, increasing its performance. Reducing seams on the underside of the boat also helps them last longer.
- Versatile Size: With the 156D, you get fifteen and a half feet for people and gear. It’s a fun paddle boat as well as a reliable craft for extended rowing trips.

E Series
The ‘E’ stands for the ‘elliptical’ shape. The ‘E’ Series rafts feature a high rising, pointed bow and a squared stern. The squared stern makes a nice platform for the paddle captain. ‘E’ Series rafts rise 2 inches higher in the bow than our ‘R’ series rafts. ‘E’ series boats have a slightly narrower beam and smaller diameter tubes.
The AIRE 156E is a rising star in our lineup of rafts. Wherever this boat goes, it goes with a reputation for taking on steep rivers. The elliptical design makes for quick maneuvers when picking your line down a technical rapid. The 156E is good for R6-R9 paddle teams and is a fun gear raft when outfitted with a frame.
- Narrow Feel: The 156E feels considerably narrower than other boats.
- Unique Bow Design: The bow on 156E rafts is pointed, and sheds water better than round rafts. It also comes up at a steep angle, giving this raft an advantage when navigating drops and deep holes.
- Straight Side Tubes: The 156E tracks straight due to its shape, including its straight side tubes.
- Guide Friendly Stern: If anybody needs a good platform, it’s the guide. If they can’t get into position, everyone is in trouble. The squared-off shape and low rise on the 156E make it a joy to guide.
